One of the worst sources of atmosphere pollution today is contamination from oxides of nitrogen, sulfur, carbon, with heavy metals and dust particles from heat and power plants burning solid fuels. The growing share of power generated by coal plants and the increase of the amount of fuel burned leads to the growth of pollution by solid waste, filling ash dumps.
These sites are harmful to the environment. Ash dumps contain heavy metals, magnesium, calcium and sodium. Dust control in ash dumps is a very important task.
At this time there are many methods of dust control. The most economical method is the application of a film. The main difficulty of the method is the selection of a film material and the calculation of its required thickness.
A dust control cover should be thick enough with relatively low cost and high durability. Polymer-bitumen materials, being the least expensive and the most durable water-proofing material, are a perfect choice. The service life of the material can exceed 10 years.
Scientific literature contains the calculations for the thickness of the film with consideration of wind loads. At 70 KPH and a maximum film temperature of 40-50ºС/104-122ºF, it should be at least 5 mm thick.
To reduce costs, it is recommended to use a bitumen-mineral mix, which is less expensive than neat bitumen. To prepare a dust material for ash dumps, GlobeCore offers the UVB-1 and UVB-2 units for production of bitumen emulsion and modified bitumen respectively.
The technology of application of the bitumen-mineral mix is as follows. The surface of the ash dump is opened to the depth of between 1 to 1.5 cm. Liquid emulsion is then sprayed over it at low pressure. It mixes very well with the opened layer without any additional effort. Setting takes from several hours to as much 24 hours. In the end, the dump is covered with a durable, reliable and thick coating. Material consumption is only 1.5 liters/m2.
If the coating must be especially durable or low temperatures are anticipated, it is recommended to use a latex-modified emulsion.
